On Tuesday, May 12, 2026, Alexis de Tocqueville was honored at the National Assembly.
As part of National Day of Remembrance for the Slave Trade, Slavery, and Their Abolition on May 10 and the 25th anniversary of the Taubira Law, a commemorative plaque bearing the famous deputy’s name was unveiled on one of the walls of the main courtyard of the Palais Bourbon.
The aim is to pay tribute to him, as well as to Victor Hugo, Alphonse de Lamartine, Louisy Matthieu, and Victor Schœlcher, all deputies who were committed to the abolition of slavery in 1848.
The ceremony was attended by Jean Guillaume de Tocqueville, his wife Stéphanie, and MP Philippe Gosselin. (source: La Presse de la Manche, May 26, 2026)
These plaques will be visible to the 2,000 visitors who pass through the doors of the Palais-Bourbon each day.
